Title: Chase the Solution, Not the Dragon
Ceramic Vase🏺
.
A studio project from my Cultural Studies in Visual Art class from undergrad.
.
This ceramic vase references a 16th century Chinese piece. I used traditional and contemporary techniques on the surface design of the vase.
.
The imagery I chose to use was based off pieces from the Ming dynasty period.
.
I incorporated some contemporary text including original poetry, newspaper headlines, and imagery to reference the Overdose crisis in Canada 🇨🇦 and the US 🇺🇸.
.
The fentanyl that is killing thousands of people is believed to be coming from China; it's a personal topic for me, as I lost my housemate just over 5 years ago, my best friend 12 years ago, and struggled with a substance use disorder myself.
.
"The only way we'll ever touch the problem of addiction is by developing and fostering viable culture."-Dr. Bruce K. Alexander .
.
The solution for me personally was nurturing my creativity (attending art school and grad school), building a supportive community that transcends geographical borders. Rehabilitation/ treatment (more than one attempt), counselling , and a 12 step program of my choice.
.
If you're struggling with a substance use disorder or think you might have a problem.. please ask for help or reach out! .
.
Losing people to accidental overdoses or suicide is not a solution. I share my story and what helped me build the life I love today, as a service to the community.

Welcome to the picturesque #VermontLife

It’s been just over a year since my Studio, artwork, and clay arrived from British Columbia 🇨🇦.
.
Juggling renovations with Grad School and family needs on top of COVID-19 has made new flooring a challenge but I’ll get there.
.
I’m happy with the space and ready to work again. I’m grateful to have the support of my fiancée Kelly, my family here in Vermont, and all around the world. Thank you for those of you who have been sharing how my work has impacted your own work. It’s hard to believe it’s been a decade of work and I’m still Emerging!
.

Hi my name is Ciro (pronounced like Cheer-Oh).
.
Art with context:
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
‘And Yet I Shine’ is a mixed media art installation I created while finishing my undergraduate degree and it was recently published in Disabled Voices.
.
This was me using the visual literacy I was taught to stand up for myself.
Not every professor or instructor will understand and that’s okay. Punishing a student for having a documented disability is wrong.
.
I began my journey in visual arts with activism for narcolepsy with cataplexy, a neurological condition that affects 1 in 2,000 people and 3 million world wide.
.
I boldly share about my life with an invisible condition, because it is highly stigmatized by the media, and thus misunderstood by society.
.
I was struggling with the invisibility aspect of my condition, and resisting the temptation to prove that my mental/ physical limitations are real.
.
When facing adversity in the classroom, the best response is through action, innovation, and creativity.
.
In this piece, I pushed the boundaries on what I thought was expected of this material and of me.
. I am intrigued by the translucency of porcelain because it personifies how I feel. As a person who struggles with daytime sleepiness everyday, I feel opaque and fragile like porcelain in the morning. Surrounded by an omnipresent fogginess.
. The sunsets and I feel like me again. The transformation begins the artist within me creates at night.
.
The drawing backdrop is rooted around statements of fact, negative associations, or misconceptions linked to narcolepsy.
.
The wavy lines are actual brainwaves from a sleep study when I was in a dream (REM) state of sleep. Hidden between those lines is a silhouette of me.
.
The porcelain piece was first thrown on a potter’s wheel, then later carved, and decorated with a self-portrait depicting me asleep in class. The medium of ceramics teaches me that life is a balancing act between heart, head, and hand. I believe in the redemptive power of art.

Thank you @johnpatrickroach for the share and being an enthusiastic supporter. I titled this print “For Adam” because it was a reminder to my friend @adamdelmarcelle that we are resilient and fierce when it comes to #HarmReduction and our mission is to cultivate ways to unify the voices of those impacted by losing people to the #overdosecrisis
.
The print for me was an attempt to reach a friend’s sister before an accidental overdose. I failed. This was part of my cannon of printmaking work from under grad.
.
Today this print is a reminder that I’m not owned by those chains of addiction and that art has the power to move people. Expression is an essential feeling for me and when I begin to lose sight of that, I suffer. Wake UP CIRO make art! 6 AM here we go!
