Title: Chase the Solution, Not the Dragon
Ceramic Vase🏺
.
A studio project from my Cultural Studies in Visual Art class from undergrad.
.
This ceramic vase references a 16th century Chinese piece. I used traditional and contemporary techniques on the surface design of the vase.
.
The imagery I chose to use was based off pieces from the Ming dynasty period.
.
I incorporated some contemporary text including original poetry, newspaper headlines, and imagery to reference the Overdose crisis in Canada 🇨🇦 and the US 🇺🇸.
.
The fentanyl that is killing thousands of people is believed to be coming from China; it's a personal topic for me, as I lost my housemate just over 5 years ago, my best friend 12 years ago, and struggled with a substance use disorder myself.
.
"The only way we'll ever touch the problem of addiction is by developing and fostering viable culture."-Dr. Bruce K. Alexander .
.
The solution for me personally was nurturing my creativity (attending art school and grad school), building a supportive community that transcends geographical borders. Rehabilitation/ treatment (more than one attempt), counselling , and a 12 step program of my choice.
.
If you're struggling with a substance use disorder or think you might have a problem.. please ask for help or reach out! .
.
Losing people to accidental overdoses or suicide is not a solution. I share my story and what helped me build the life I love today, as a service to the community.
